The major types of college essays

There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

How do you make a proper English essay outline

English essays tend to be judged not just on the content but with clear focus on the adherence to rules of the language. The pitfalls you will encounter in that sense may be avoided by creating a good outline. This process can be completed as follows:

In company

Some students are better writers in the company of others. If you are like this, gather a group of studious people who you know well and trust when you begin writing. They can help you pick the topic and give you the advantage of having another opinion to refer to. This is especially helpful if you don’t notice yourself falling into boring literary habits. This help will come in handy throughout the outline process.

In solitude

Some people write better alone. If this is you, it may help to brainstorm for longer periods of time to make up for the ideas you won’t be getting from others. On the bright side, with fewer people to consult the decision making process in selecting a topic will also be shorter.

Look for sources

Having picked your topic (in a team or alone) you can begin to seek out sources of information that fit with your chosen theme. Have a good few ready even if you think you will need much less. It’s good to have extras handy in case any of your points conflict and need to be left out.

Make notes

Once you have all your sources selected, go through them and make notes of anything that seems promising. Make sure your notes are easy to follow so that making good citations later on will be easier.

Transform the notes into points

Organize your notes into points that can be used to fill in the body of the essay. These points can also be put into order at this stage so the outline would have continuity.

Plot a basic introduction and conclusion

Having put together the rest of the essay in outline form you can come up with simplified versions of the introduction and conclusion. Neither will be final but these can give you an idea of what your essay will look like after you put in the final touches.

These are the steps to creating your English essay outline. Everything at this stage can change if the need arises but having flushed out the process at this stage any later adjustments will be much simpler.
