The major types of college essays

There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

4 major rules for writing scholarship essay

Writing a scholarship essay is probably the most stressful thing you have ever faced. Your future rests on how well you do and you don’t want to fail.

Fear not! There are some tried and true techniques for writing scholarship essays that guarantee you’ll get the results you’re after. Follow this guide and you’ll be coasting right into just about any college you choose.

Show that you are a person outside of academia

What!? That might sound like one of the most contradictory tips you’ll ever get, but think about it. Most of the other students writing scholarship essays are trying to prove how well they do in school. They think that this is what will get that scholarship.

But there is more involved. If you’re writing a scholarship essay you’re probably already pretty academically talented. The person reviewing the paper (and rewarding the scholarship) probably already knows that, too.

You want to make sure that the person reviewing it knows that you have goals and interests outside of studying and getting a degree. By showing more about your personality than what you can do in class, you will also…

Gain the compassion of the person reviewing the essay

Think about it – would you rather award an essay to some smug little punk that thinks he is the best thing ever or a person who has heart and wants to accomplish truly noble goals? Show the person reviewing the essay that you want to do good things and you will be more likely to be awarded the cash.

If possible, learn as much as possible about the organization offering the scholarship

When you know what motivates the organization providing the scholarship you can try to build your essay in a way that resonates with their motives. If they are providing scholarships to disadvantaged minorities, you want to make sure that in some way you show them just how disadvantaged you are.

Take it a step further and show them that you will accomplish the same goals that they wish to accomplish. Show them that you will succeed despite the odds and the money is all yours.

Follow the rules

Make sure that you are following the guidelines set out. The tips mentioned above are the best you will ever learn, but if the prompt for the scholarship essay asks you to write a scientific paper on the mating habits of sponges in the Arctic Sea you’re going to have a very difficult time following them. Make sure that you follow these tips so that you can bring home the bacon and have someone else pay your way through college. You deserve it.
