The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. Application Essay Writing: Points to remember

College applications are very important to a student’s academic future, and there are many topics you may be told to write about in your application. In most cases, this essay will be your only chance to make the college selection committee notice you and like you. So there is a lot on the line. Keeping some key points in mind as you look at your application essay and begin writing can help you be successful and get into the college you want.

  1. Remember to evaluate and dig deep in these essays, there shouldn’t be any generalization of fluff in these papers. You aren't being asked in most cases to simply describe or talk about something at surface value. Dig deep and really analyze the topic you are writing about and look at it as an opportunity to let your abilities, talents, experiences, and understanding shine. There are no summarizing or book report type of writings for the college application papers!
  2. Make sure you stay on track and choose topics that can be related to you in a personal and powerful way. The application essay should not be just another research paper or opinion paper. Remember that the admissions folks want find out more about you and what you write in your paper is the primary way they will do this- so make it strong and make it interesting and make it shine.
  3. Be careful that papers asking you to talk about an event in your life do not become bragging papers. The committee doesn’t want to read a paper boasting about how smart or great you are or how many great things you have done. They want to know what you have done that has made a difference for other and how it impacted and changed you. Remember they want to see you analyze and respond.
  4. Sometimes the application may simply ask you to write the paper without any specific topic assigned. This gives you the freedom to write about anything you want, and while that sounds great it actually can be a heavier burden that being given an assigned topic to write about. Keep in mind that just because you are able to choose what to write about you still must deliver high quality work that impresses the committee and is formatted and structured correctly.
  5. Plan ahead and do not wait till the last minute to write the paper. Waiting the day before you are mailing in your application is foolish because any good writer will need to do at least 2 revisions on any paper before tuning it in. Make sure you give yourself time to write, pout the paper away for a day or two, and then look at it again to check for errors or mistakes. Your academic future is on the line so make sure you do it right!
