The major types of college essays

There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

Descriptive Essay Writing-How To Use An Online Sample

There is a great deal of comment amongst academics and particularly online about plagiarism. But one aspect of looking at and studying the work of other writers involves reading and studying online samples of descriptive essays. There are two points to understand here. First it is completely legal to copy online examples for the purposes of private study. Second this is a brilliant way to help you write better descriptive essays. Plagiarism is not the same as taking other people’s work and studying it to learn skills and ideas for your own original work. You are learning from others not taking their work to present as your own.

You never present the online sample as your own work. You use the online sample as a means of learning how to create your descriptive essays. You see the structure of the essay. If you're lucky you might see the comments made by the person who examined or graded that essay and that too can be a real help.

So what should you be looking for with an online sample?

Well as the title suggests, a descriptive essay involves describing something. It could be a person or an object or even an emotion or feeling. But you need to be descriptive in writing this particular essay. So when you decide the content of the descriptive essay you then need to look at the following points.

  • What is the origin of this person or thing?
  • Describe them, their appearance
  • What do they do?
  • How well do they do it?

So with these questions in mind, and knowing what a descriptive essay is, look at an online sample, or rather several online samples of a descriptive essay, and make notes according to these questions. You learn from the work of others.

How well has the writer of this descriptive essay reacted to or commented upon the questions or points listed above? Are they descriptive in an interesting way? How much of each paragraph do they spend commenting on these points?

The whole point of using an online sample is to improve your technique and knowledge. You must know, that is have the knowledge, about the content and type of a descriptive essay. But what you want to do is improve your skill to write really good descriptive essays and that can come in part by reading and studying online samples.
