There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.
Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

A simple way to teach someone an effective way of making an outline is to follow the rule of three. For simplicity’s sake, let’s say we can divide your coursework into 3 parts. They don’t have to be equal in size but they should be approximately equal in significance. These 3 parts would be called sections. They contain quite a bit of material.
Label the sections with Roman Numerals, like so: I, II, III. Each section should contain at least 3 main ideas, which you can label with alphabet letters, like this: A, B, C. for each main idea, pull out 3 smaller supporting ideas and label them 1, 2, 3. When you form them onto paper or onto the computer screen, indent each new heading slightly so they line up with the one above. Now your outline should look like the one below. For the purposes of illustration, we will use basic nutrition as the coursework topic. Your outline may look something like this:
Basic Nutrition
A. Vitamins
B. Minerals
C. Fiber
A. Fruits
