The major types of college essays

There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

10 Things To Mention In Your Poverty Essay

A difficult topic is always a hard assignment when writing an essay. There are emotional feelings, ingrained positions, and tough sissies to discuss. Depending on your particular assignment, you could be asked to defend one position, argue against another, or simply do a summary of what the different concerns are about the subject. One topic that always creates debate and arguments is poverty. There are some things you always want to discuss when writing your poverty essay.

  1. General overview. When you begin writing about poverty, you need to define it. You need to discuss in general terms what it is, and what and who it impacts in society.
  2. Origins. You need to discuss how poverty came about, placing it in its historical context. You can discuss past incidences of poverty, why it existed and what caused the present state of poverty in our culture.
  3. Factors. As much as the origins of poverty are important, so are the continuing factors which keep in going in our society. You need a detailed discussion of the factors of poverty.
  4. Different segments of the population. One area you need to discuss is which segments of the population are affected by poverty. You need to debate the impact of poverty on the different racial and ethnic segments of the population.
  5. Different countries. You must touch on the impact poverty in other countries has had on the poverty in our own country. There have been waves of immigrants flooding the shores and a discussion about where they came from and what emotions and mentalities they have coming from possible poverty stricken lands.
  6. Contrast urban and rural regions. You need to discuss the differences between the type of poverty in cities and in the country, its prevalence, and its impact on life in those areas.
  7. Job market. You need to discuss the impact of the job market and availability of full time employment as it relates to resulting poverty.
  8. Impact on families. A crucial element in any essay on poverty is the impact on the members of society, especially the families who are experiencing the tragic circumstances.
  9. Impact on the rest of society. A good balance must be struck between those who are in poverty and those who are not, a discussion about the impact of poverty on those who are not suffering from it is very important.
  10. Politics and Government. No discussion about poverty is complete without a debate about what the government is doing concerning poverty, and how the politics are handled when dealing with the sensitive issues.
