The major types of college essays

There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

Unusual College Entrance Essay Topics

Over the last few years’ college admittance officers have gotten increasingly more creative. Gone are the days of "Where do you see yourself in ten years". Instead college admittance questions and essay topics have gotten weirder and weirder. This is in response to the gradual decline in creativity as more and more students choose to write their essays in a way that they think will be "correct". Rather than writing unique papers students are choosing to manipulate their paper in order to appeal to the admittance committees. In order to stomp this out once and for all and encourage students to tap into their unique and creative minds, the questions being asked have become far more interesting.

"Would you rather be raised by aliens or robots or dinosaurs?" Brandies University asked in 2013.

The strange and absurd college entrance essay questions challenge students to think critically about different ideas that they probably have never considered before. They also allow the students an opportunity to show off their personalities in a way that is less formal and more creative.

Why More Colleges Are Choosing To Use Unusual Entrance Essay Topics

In the past essay questions like this may of made people second guess the school's academic agenda, but now it seems fairly common for these institutions to set themselves apart by asking original questions to their applicants. It is nearly impossible for a student to give a generic answer to a question like "If you had a time machine what year would you go back to and why?" Not only do these kinds of unique inquiries prevent students from writing essays that are just "more of the same" they also prevent instances of plagiarism or paper copying.

It isn't very likely that a content mill will have a paper for sale that answers the question "What was your favorite toy as a kid and what ever happened to it?" And by answering these sorts of questions students are actually even more challenged to think about their thesis.

How do students feel about these essay questions? Well the reviews are generally mixed. Some student’s find these essay topics amusing to write about but other find that they are too ridiculous to take seriously. It also makes the application process more difficult for students who are applying to many different schools. Now, they have to write a unique paper for each institution, which can be quite stressful and time consuming.
