The major types of college essays

There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

Admissions Essays: how to stand out from the Crowd

They say that once you graduate from high school, life starts to get more and more difficult. You will start feeling this as soon as you start writing your admission essay and you will realize that there is a very high competition in every college you apply to. After all, there are probably tens, if not hundreds of people who are same as you and who will want to be admitted on the same spot you are competing for. In the end, they are all high school graduates, they all have the same kind of grades as you and they all have managed to build up an extra-curricular activities portfolio to impress the colleges they apply to. What makes the difference is how they present themselves and this is why it is important that you have a very good admission essay.

  1. Avoid making the number 1 mistake all college applicants make: writing about their achievements as if they were a long list of grocery shopping. Do not simply list out every single one of your achievements and activities you were involved in, because this will send the wrong message to those who get to read the essay: that of the fact that you are not original.
  2. Find the right tone. Being too stiff and academic can also denote lack of uniqueness, but being much too informal can damage your score as well. Make sure that you find a way in between. Remember that colleges are not looking for robots that are 100% into being perfect students, but into people who can make a contribution for their institution (regardless of whether that contribution is related to the academics or to something else: organizing dancing classes for the students, for example).
  3. Bring a bit of humor into your essay. However, make sure not to overdo this, because colleges are not necessarily looking for stand-up comedians, but for people who are complete from all points of view.
  4. Do not brag about and do not underestimate your skills. Find a way that is in between the two of them. Show the college admission jury that you are confident in the skills you have managed to gain up to the moment, but that you are not smug about them. Also, show them that you know you have plenty left to learn and that you will gladly do it under the supervision of their academic staff.
