The major types of college essays

There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

Tricks on how to write an introduction paragraph for a research paper

The introduction of a research paper introduces the audience to the topic you have chosen or the one that was assigned to you. It is the first time that they get a real understanding of exactly what your paper will be about. This is where you hook them and gain their interest. The introduction is a very important part of the essay - every term paper writer knows that. You have to do certain things to make it into the part of the essay it is meant to be.

What to do

  • Introduce your topic
  • Explain what you will be talking about
  • Gain their interest to make them want to read on

Introduce your topic

When introducing your topic you want to tell people what the paper will be about. This sounds simple enough but you have to do it in a way that will not be repeated exactly in the body paragraphs of the paper. You do not want to repeat yourself and end up with a redundant, boring paper. Make the topic clear and interesting.

Explain

After you introduce your topic you will want to go into a bit more detail. Tell them not only the paper’s topic but what about the topic you will discuss. This is where you add more detail without giving up anything you will need for the body of the paper. It is an introduction to the paper so you want to give them a taste of what is to come without giving anything big away. This is usually not too difficult to do.

Gain their interest

If you do not have their interest by the end of the introduction, than you will have given them no incentive to read on further. The teacher has to keep reading, of course. The more he or she wants to read on however, will affect your grade. The grade that you get will be based on how well the paper is done and a big part of that is how interesting it will be to read.

Do all of these things and your paper should have a good start. Remember the importance of introducing the topic and explaining the paper’s premise. The interest of the reader may be the real key to a good paper. Use interest well and to your advantage.
