The major types of college essays

There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

Academic Writing Tips: Creating an impressive Essay

The challenge for every student is always how to write that impressive essay that will wow the reader and cause them to finally be acknowledged or even be recognized as good writers. Here is a guideline of steps that a student can use in order to create that desired essay.

Research the topic given

Before a student can start writing about any given topic, he or she needs to gain a clear understanding about the topic at hand. The student needs to identify what it is exactly that the teacher or examiner of the essay wants, for example the sources that the teacher would accept, what reference materials to use and so on. The student should therefore carry out a research on the topic and make notes making sure that he or she keeps track of the sources so as to help when it comes to citation.

Review other written essays

The student should go through other well written essays related to the topic that he or she is working on. When reviewing those essays the student should analyze what the other writers are saying and what makes them more acceptable. How the author presents the facts that he or she claims is it with illustrations or examples etc.

Developing the idea and essay statement

The student should then try and come up with his or her unique ideas that support whatever the other writers are saying. This will involve brain storming or even mind mapping to come up with impressive ideas for the topic. After coming up with the ideas, the student should choose around three of his or her best ideas that support the topic and write an essay statement. This statement makes the reader have an understanding of where and why the writer is headed. A good statement is one that has a narrow focus and has both the topic and objective included in it.

Outline the essay

The student should then develop an outline of his or her essay. The outline should include about three arguments and their respective supporting evidence.

Write the essay

After designing the outline the student should start writing the essay. At first the student can free write so as to let his or her thoughts flow freely and then later on he or she can be concise so as to meet the requirement stated by the teacher. The essay should have a compelling title and a captivating introduction and a logical conclusion in order to convince the reader.

After writing the essay the student should go through it to check for grammatical and spelling errors.
