There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.
Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

If you have a college essay due and are agonizing about how boring it is to write, know that it is a common symptom of being a student. When you actually get to writing it, it will be boring too. Your attitude is a bigger part of homework than you might realize. Because of this, many students look back after receiving a poor grade on their essay and wonder why they procrastinated so much or why they were so angry for having to write this essay. You don’t want to be one of those.
The number one point to making an interesting essay is making sure that you are interested in the topic. If you aren’t, the reader will be able to tell. Creating a ‘hook’ that captures the reader’s interest is something every student can do if they know how. Here are a few steps to making your essay great:
Writing with a catchy hook isn’t as hard as some teachers make it out to be. Any student can do it, and you’ve probably done it before without knowing it. Start with this current essay and try a few of the ideas above. The only way that you can really progress is to get out there and get your feet wet, so to speak. If the words don’t sound right, rearrange them. If your classmate gets bored reading it, ask him what he does like about it and then focus more on that. Finding just the right way to start your essay can take some time, but it is definitely worth the effort. Put in the time and you’ll see results.
