The major types of college essays

There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

5 Good Descriptive Essay Topics for College Students

The dreaded essay. All students fear this integral part of college life. However, if you wish to graduate in your chosen field you will have to conquer the demon that is the essay.

What is a Descriptive Essay?

Essay formats come widely varied and usually it is your professor that will choose the format that is required. Descriptive essays are one of the more common types that college students are required to write, and they can be both easy and difficult. They generally require less research than others, making them easy, since they have a large creative writing component and are often based on the writer's personal knowledge or experience. It can be difficult though to choose a topic for your essay if one has not been assigned.

If you are stuck, here are 5 good topic ideas to get your creative writing juices flowing:

  1. Childhood Memories
  2. Every person has a childhood memory that has stuck with them. It may be something humorous that you did as a child, or perhaps it will revolve around the entrepreneurial summer that you operated your first lemonade stand. Your thoughts and feelings while relating why this memory is so important to you, makes a great essay topic.

  3. Phobias
  4. Common fears such as heights or snakes may not be original enough for a picky professor. However, if you have a more unusual phobia, such as a fear of white hair (I think I made that up!) can provide you with a wonderful essay topic. The uniqueness gives you plenty of options to expand your essay by working from your thoughts on why you have the fear, and the possible causes for it.

  5. Scenic Views
  6. This is one essay topic that would give the writer the ultimate flexibility for writing creatively. The words that you choose to describe the views that you have seen will give the reader the opportunity to see them through your eyes. Your word choices should make visions of beauty rise off the page.

  7. An Embarrassing Moment
  8. When you are looking for the best topic for a descriptive essay and wish to use humour, your most embarrassing moment should be the first thought. You can become a creative writing genius while describing how much of a fool you are. There is plenty of room here as well to expand on your topic.

  9. A Hero
  10. This topic may just be the best of them all and is very personal. You can write about how your life was changed by this person(s), or how they make you feel and why. Or you may choose to explain how you have tried to mimic some of their qualities. Great psychology topic choice.
