The major types of college essays

There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

How To Write A Good Argumentative Essay: Common Things To Remember

Argumentative essays can be good writing exercises that help gain understanding of multiple sides of an argument. This type of essay helps students evaluate an argument. At the same time students are expected to organize their findings well in a manner that will help prove personal understanding behind the main concept. The student writes about their position related to the issue at hand but with logical information. The following points can help you gain useful insight when writing a good argumentative essay:

  • Supporting data should attempt to provide additional viewpoints to the main idea. The main idea or argument sets the tone for the rest of the paper. Your data should provide insight from both sides of the issue, and in some cases an issue can have more the two sides. You want to show your audience your knowledge of the topic, but you should be open to sharing other sides to make the foundation for the issue at hand.
  • Having an opinion on the issue may not be enough to show supporting evidence for the main idea. Some students make the mistake of discussing opinions too often rather than provide solid evidence related to the issue or actual argument. Providing opinions provide more insight on why the issue is an argument in the first place. But, you want to provide solid information that is factual that gets to the heart of the issue.
  • There may be more than two sides to an argument that need to be explored. Some students think most arguments have two sides, but some issues have multiple sides that should be explored to help increase credibility of your argument.
  • Any ideas related to your main idea should have logic order. This helps readers follow your thoughts in order instead of having them appear in an unorganized or messy manner. This is an element you will want to pay close attention to when revising your paper. This helps the argument come across to readers clearly while making supporting points and a potential solution seem acceptable.
  • Is your issue plausible? Think about how your issue can be broken down and proven. You may need to ask yourself if your argument can be solved and what type of solution can be suggested. Is your conclusion realistic or would you suggest improvements to something already implemented for your argument?
