There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

Never hurry up while writing your Essay

Effective essay writing is an art form. You are given an assignment or you chose a topic on your own and must create a coherent, cognizant, well thought out, written work of high quality. There is no need to hurry through this project.

Once you have the topic, before beginning the writing process, you must completely and exhaustively, research the subject matter. In order to put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, you must familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of the topic. You must gather the facts and evidence of all the arguments, pros and cons. This takes time. Preparation is the key to good writing and cannot and should not be rushed. Glossing over a fact or missing a point of view will reduced the quality of your presentation. Your arguments will be better received if the reader feels you are not cutting corners.

As you attack the writing assignment, a jumble of ideas and thoughts cascade from your mind. You hurriedly transcribe them hoping to remember them as you proceed through the writing process. As you write an essay, many different ideas will lead you in different directions. You will start with one point and end up completely discussing and making an entirely different argument. The end result will be a disjointed, confusing, and sloppy essay. This is a first draft. You should always write multiple drafts when creating an essay. The first time you generate text the ideas will not flow properly or make sense. You will need to correct grammatical and spelling mistakes. Never rush through the editing process.

If you hurry through a project, you will complete the essay in one sitting. This is a mistake. You should always take time between reading your multiple drafts. Not only will simple mistakes in grammar or spelling leap off the page, the flow of the text will become more evident. When you first write an essay, you are so immersed in its subject matter, that your brain may perceive something that is not in the writing. Taking the time a to review your writing after a few hours or days will allow you to gain some perspective and read the work with a critical eye. You will see if one paragraph leads into another, if the introduction and conclusion are proper, and if the arguments you first envisioned are succinctly and efficiently contained within the body of the essay.

The quality of your work can only be improved when you take the time to evaluate it. You are making a concerted effort to write an essay, you must put in the time to make it the best you can.
