The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.
Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

Your writing can often benefit from a well crafted summary before delving into the more in-depth explanations of your thesis statement or expansions on the subject. The most important thing to remember about summarizing is identifying your points of discussion and describing them succinctly so that your reader has an idea what will be discussed during your discourse. After you have successfully identified your main points your may begin the process of summarizing. To do this you need to navigate from the general to the specific. The general being the topic you were assigned by your professor and the specific being your personal take on the topic, your hypothesis or inference and the findings of your research.
A good summary does not need to contain every single detail of your discussion. It need only cover the following.
Have a clear idea of which aspect of your essay you intend to condense. This is so that you do not accidentally encroach on other topics and muddle your summary.
Any topic you address can be looked at from a myriad of angles. How has it been looked at historically? How has it been addressed in other writings?? In compiling a summary you must think of the most relevant approach to any aspect of your essay and base your summary on that.
Your research is being conducted to achieve a purpose. There may be more than one purpose in some cases but in the compilation of a summary your focus must remain on the most important theme you are exploring or argument you are supporting.
Your summary cannot neglect discoveries that your research has uncovered. This is perhaps the most important part of your essay and without it any summary comes across as incomplete.
It is important to note that these points should be addressed briefly and care should be taken not to cram too much information into your summary because it will make your essay repetitious. This summary will serve as a guide for your work and as you construct your essay so you can refer to it as you go along to ensure that all the salient points have been adequately addressed. Happy Writing!
