There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.
Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

For most of the people out there, getting into college is a very important thing and it can mark a new era in their lives. However, out of thousands of applications, the committee will only select a few of them to actually be accepted and the truth is that the percentages and numbers out there can leave you pessimistic about your odds of acceptance.
This should not be this way. Like each and every applicant out there, you stand the same chance of being accepted. You are given one chance every single year to be accepted into the college of your dreams and you stand equal chances with everybody else in front of the admission committee. It all depends on how you use this chance.
One mistake many college applicants make is that they focus solely on their portfolio, on their SATs, on their grades and on the extra-curricular activities that build up a college application over the years. However, college applications are more than that.
Of course, all those things will show how hard you have worked towards this goal but the harsh truth is that there will be thousands of application just like that: all of them with fairly good grades, all of them abundant in activities and all of them coming from people as eager as you are to get into a particular college.
What will actually make the difference between you and them will be your personality and your own history. And there is no other way you can show the admission committee these things other than through your admission essay.
Your admission essay is precisely this – your chance to shine. Even if you do not have the best grades in the world and even if your portfolio does not include prizes won at international Physics contests, your admission essay can and will make the difference for you.
Think originality and thing personality. These are the things your committee will be looking into. Do not simply lay out your achievements so far – make your college application actually shine through the thousands of other applications. Make yourself shine! After all, you are a unique individual and you have your own goals and aspirations. You should show this to the admission committee because, in the end, they do not accept folders and paperwork into college – they accept people with real human traits.
