There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.
Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

There are many different formatting styles for writing essays and research papers. Depending on the specific topic of research, and the end recipient of the paper, there are quite a few options for formatting and citations.
To determine which is the best format to use, there are a few steps you can take:
Before asking your instructor, take a look at all class and assignment handouts and online information. Most instructors will list formatting requirements on the syllabus as well as on assignment instructions. If there are no specific requirements, see if your instructor mentions a specific style – APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.
It is also important to remain consistent with your formatting style so that you can more easily use it. The more you work with one formatting type, the easier it will become for further classes.
When you get your first draft completed using the format that you have found to be most appropriate, it is often a good idea to have it looked over by the instructor. Though they most likely won’t do a full review, they can check to make sure you are following the style to their specifications.
You should also consider having it reviewed by a peer that is in class – or another who is at least in the same program. As you get further within your program, it will become easier to help others troubleshoot for errors in their formatting as well.
