The major types of college essays

There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.

Narrative Essays (Story Time)

Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

Getting some college essay topic ideas for free

If you are writing a college essay and you need some topic ideas for free you can look into a handful of places including:

  • Textbooks for the course
  • Lecture notes
  • Online resources
  • Study guides
  • Classmates

Ask around and see if anything that was covered in your paper interests you at all. If you are still at a stand still consider these topics:

  • Is there a way to tell when art is really art?
  • Should beauty pageants be banned?
  • Why is American infrastructure and public transportation so much worse than other first world countries?

When you are writing a research paper, it is important to know what teachers are looking for before you start writing. Knowing what is expected of you will help you to cater your essay to achieve the best grade.

So what is it that teachers are looking for when they grade your paper?

In every instance, teachers want a clearly written and well organized piece of writing. The best grades are given to papers with an original thesis, specifically one that shows great writing and thorough research. If you have an old thesis that has been written multiple times before by you or someone else, your grade will suffer no matter how well you write the paper.

Now it is important to find a good topic. In order to do that you should:

  • find a topic that is interesting
  • talk with your classmates and instructor about topics that are interesting to you
  • pose the topic as a problem that you should solve or a question that you should answer

Finding sources:

  • now you have to review sources such as a library catalog or bibliographies
  • evaluate primary and secondary sources
  • look through journals and books

Keep your research organized by:

  • creating a system for writing your sources on cards
  • keeping your sources organized by importance
  • creating a system for note taking

Write your outline:

  • What is your topic?
  • Why is your topic significant?
  • How relevant is your background material?
  • What is the thesis statement?
  • How will your organization support your thesis?

Then write the introduction wherein you reveal your organizational plan and the purpose of your paper. Write the body of your text and the wrap it all up with the conclusion.
