There are four major types of college essays that you will write. When you understand the major difference between each one your writing assignments will be that much easier. The four major types of college essays are: Narrative Essays, Descriptive Essays, Expository Essays, Persuasive essays. Through this article we will explore the differences between each one.
Writing a narrative essay isn’t much different than writing a story. This isn’t to imply that it’s the same as writing a short piece of fiction. In this case it’s more like a news story or a magazine article. You will tell a story about a real life experience – either yours or someone else’s. It is typically written in the first person perspective. At the end of the essay you will have delivered a personal statement or belief in a powerful and effective way.

I was walking to my home recently after a long day’s work in the office. I had decided that I was not going to board a bus so as to give myself enough time to relax my mind after the day’s workload. The road was very busy with a large volume of traffic since it was on a Friday evening; a day when everybody in town always headed out of town for the weekend upcountry. This was one of the reasons that discouraged me from using my car or board a bus because they keep you long in the traffic jam during such times of the week. I was walking side by side with a primary school pupil who was on his way home from school. I was enjoying the hustle and bustle of the evening where everyone was either in a hurry to reach their homes on time or to accomplish whatever activities they were after. The smooth flow of traffic and their hooting was rudely interrupted by a loud explosion which came from behind us.
The next thing remembered was slowly opening my eyes and what welcomed my eyes was the spotless white ceiling above me. I was lying on my back. The strong smell of hospital drugs filled my lungs which made me to quickly realize that I was in the hospital. I slowly shifted my eyes from the ceiling a long the blue hospital wall which confirmed my presence on the hospital bed. My eyes were welcomed by a face which I could never forget. It was the beautiful face of my dear wife, Rachel and a young face of somebody who was about eleven years old. The two bodies were seated next to me. When my eyes were fully fixed on my wife and the other party seated next to her, I realized that it was the pupil who was walking by my side.
“God is a great shepherd”, the boy said to me with a warm smile. I smiled back at him and my wife joined us in smiling. I did not even ask what happened for the doctor shortly came in, and surprisingly, my wife and the boy were not sent out of the room by the doctor. The doctor simply did some check-up on me and reading from his face, he wore some surprise on his face. “Madam, you husband is very well, he can be discharged right now”, the doctor told my wife who by now, she was full of happiness from a look at her face.
On our way out of the hospital, I realized that the boy had a bandaged left hand. The boy who told me he was called Alex told me of how a truck which had lost control knocked me down and brushed his hand leaving him with a slight injury. I personally lost consciousness and everybody had thought that I was not going to make it but surprisingly I had no scar on my body at all.
”God loves us, He watched over us,” the boy told me with a tender smile on his face. This quickly reminded me of Johnny Diaz’s song, “God is watching”. I have always been a Christian who could not proof whether God was in existence but that day, I recalled that God had always reminded His people, Jacob and Jeremiah to be precise, that He was always going to watch over them. Also through His son, Jesus Christ, He had promised to be with us and take care of us always.
“Sure”, I replied. I was now feeling some renewed form of energy and hope in me mixed with some aura of happiness.
“The watching eyes of God”, I said unknowingly and my wife and Alex smiled at me as we entered into my wife’s car.
