RITUAL RESOURCES

All the Greek organizations on your campus maintain a Creed or Mission Statement that guides the principles of their chapter.  Many of the values they espouse are similar in nature.  Click here for an all-encompassing Greek Community Mission Statement.

Perhaps you have heard the popular myth that all fraternity and sorority rituals are placed within the Library of Congress. Click here to learn more.

In order to assess your member’s opinions and feelings about your chapter’s Ritual and the way it is presently executed, the best way is to anonymously collect feedback.  Click here for a sample questionnaire you may use.

If you would like to facilitate a Ritual Discussion with your chapter, click here for a sample exercise with discussion questions.

Many chapters encourage all members to sign a “Code of Standards” that creates mutual accountability between the members and the chapter.  To learn how to create a set of chapter standards, click here.  We also have two sample versions of such a document.  Feel free to use or modify these templates for your chapter.

The Nine Basic Expectations of Fraternity Membership

Did you know that not all Greek Rituals are secret?  Delta Upsilon International Fraternity is one such organization.  Their chapter rituals are open to the public.  You can read about their Pledge Pinning ceremony at the following web page. http://www.deltau.org/chapter_resources/pledge_education/pledgin.htm

The North-American Interfraternity Conference has a great video available entitled Sharing My Ritual. “This video explores the meaning of ritual, the role it should play in our lives, and how we can best understand and apply the teachings of our ceremonies. This is an excellent post-initiation resource or resource for upper-classmen programming.” You can contact the NIC at (317) 872-1112 or e-mail them at nic@nicindy.org

There are a number of excellent books available about Greek life, values, hazing, Greek history, rituals, etc.  These are a few that we recommend.  Please contact us if you believe we have excluded a great resource and would like to see it added.
